Mayor Bibs Fisk’s Sarah Palin Connection
Beaver Pond, Vermont
September 2, 2008
Well, it truly is a small world! As mayor of Beaver Pond, I frequently attend conferences for mayors and local political leaders from across the country. Back in 2001, when the above photograph was taken, I met Sarah Palin, then mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, at the National Mayoral Conference held in Parsippany, New Jersey. Based on our time together, I can say that I’m not totally surprised that she was chosen by John McCain to be his vice presidential running mate. She’s a very bright, personable, and stylish woman. At the end of the conference, Sarah invited me to visit her home in Wasilla and to go on a snowmobile and bear hunting trip with her and her husband. Unfortunately, pressing mayoral duties kept me away. In turn, I invited Sarah to visit Vermont to attend our annual springtime ritual, the Beaver Pond “Bloat and Float.” Oddly, I never heard back from her. Sarah’s rise to national prominence demonstrates that you never know what will become of the people you meet. Of course, rumor has it that my name was to be placed on Howard Dean’s short list of perspective running mates had he won the Democratic nomination back in 2004. Damn that scream!
