FLU Season is Nothing to Sneeze at in Beaver Pond

posted Sunday, 21 September 2008

Hello all.

This is a reminder note from Head Nurse Ann Thrax at the Lady Zeno Memorial Groinacological Free Clinic here in Beaver Pond, Vermont.

Flu Season is approaching and fast. This year the public health authorities are worried about a pandemic flu, they are  particularly concerned about the H5N1 avian "bird flu" virus that could mutate into a new strain of flu against which humans would have no immunity. That does not sound good. Here are some ways of spreading the flu virus:

  • Direct contact, such as shaking hands.
  • Small droplets that form when a person sneezes or coughs.
  • Contact with objects such as handkerchiefs that have been in contact with fluids from an infected person's nose or throat or drinking from a glass or bottle of an infected person.(Amber it does not matter how much Vodka you have in the glass or bottle.)

You can help prevent the spread of the flu virus by:

  1. Covering your nose and mouth with a disposable tissue or the sleeve of your shirt when you cough or sneeze. (When you are talking to Margaurite LeMay keep 3 feet between you and her.)
  2. Washing your hands. You can never wash your hands enough. Hand washing is the best way to prevent the spread of any disease.
  3. NOT sharing handkerchiefs and glasses.
  4. Please plan to get your flu shot this year.

Due to the nursing shortage, I have been asked to come and give flu shots to the staff at Starr Farm Nursing Center in Burlington, Vt on Oct. 31st. This will be the 4th year that I have given shots to the employees of this facility.

I encourage everyone to get a shot this year.
