Gayest songs of all time...

It's been quite awhile since we've mentioned Ruby's, the gay bar in Beaver Pond.  Well, it's not only the gay bar of Beaver Pond, it's the only gay bar in the state of Vermont!!  We don't get to spend a lot of time there, especially in the winter, but we hear they have a new juke box!!  And on this jukebox is the 50 Gayest Songs of All Time!!!

So, who could come up with a list like that?  A website called www.samesame.com.au, that's who!  And if that address looks funny, it's because it's from Australia.  Their tag line is "inside out Australia."  Anyway, in celebrating this year's Gay Mardi Gras (isn't that an oxymoron?) they asked their readers to suggest their gayest songs.  And what a list it is!!! 

Looking at it is like tripping down memory lane complete with flashbacks and disco balls.  You may not agree with the order, but they all are pretty much fun songs or at least, at the time, songs that made you feel you weren't the only on the planet that was "different."

#46 - Deborah Harry:  "I Want That Man" - Again, probably wouldn't have made it to my list. 

#45 - Cher: "Strong Enough" -  Duh!  And this linked-version is one she made just for the gay boys!

#44 - RuPaul: "Super Model - You Better Work!" - You know it had to be somewhere on the list.

#42 - Culture Club: "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" - Yes, we do.

#40 - Wham!: "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" - George Michael is the first to have two songs on the list... Choose Life! 

#39 - Paul Lekakis: "Boom Boom Boom (Let's Go Back to My Room)" - Wow, forgot about this one!!

#38 - Kym Mazelle:  "Young Hearts Run Free" - Always thought this song sounded like a commercial for something.

#37 - George Michael: "Outside" - Number three! 

#36 - Donna Summer: "I Feel Love"- 1977?  Here's an 8 minute remix... 

#35 - Dannii Minogue: "This is It" -  Had to go to Wikipedia for this one... she's an Australian radio show host, I guess, and this song came out in 2003.  Hey it's their list, we'll give'em one.

#34 - Belinda Carlisle:  "Summer Rain" -  Not sure why this is on the list, either...

#33 - Peter Allen:  "I Go To Rio" -  I wonder if this would've made a list on a non-Australian list.  I love it... and for 1977, the video just SCREAMS.   For the less enlightened, Peter Allen was married(!) to Liza (Minnelli, not Little) and died of AIDS in 1992.  There's a LOT more to his story and you can read it about it HERE.   The Broadway musical, "The Boy From Oz" was based on his life, using his music and starred Hugh Jackman.  If you want to see Hugh perform as Peter Allen click HERE.

#29 - Madonna:  "Express Yourself" -  I bet we see more from her.

#28 - Cyndi Lauper:  "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" - Yes, we do.

#27 - Charlene:  "I've Never Been To Me" - Yeah, lady!!

#26 - Tim Curry:  "Sweet Transvestite" - Oh, OK!

#25 - Barry Manilow:  "Copacabana" - Gotta admit, I'm a Fanilow!  This video is from 1978 - very early Barry (and very gay).

#24 - Barbra Streisand and Donna Summer:  "No More Tears" - What gay boy didn't pee his pants the first time he heard that these two were going to be singing a song together?

#23 - Whitney Houston:  "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" - Was Bobby Brown that somebody?

#22 - Sister Sledge:  "We Are Family" - At #22?  The rest must REALLY be gay!

#21 - Queen:  "I Want To Break Free" - Freddy in drag... and no one knew he was gay? 

#20 - Dolly Parton:  "9 to 5" - Of course!  Don't think this song is that old?  Check out the video... typewriters in the office!

#19 - Coming Out Crew:  "Free, Gay and Happy" - Couldn't find this one... but it must be gay - it says it in the title!

#18 - Village People:  "In The Navy" -  Anime fans will like this video.

#17 - Frankie Goes To Hollywood:  "Relax" -  Too late, I already did it.

#16 - Village People:  "Macho Man" - Couldn't find a clip of the People doing it, but these guys are funny.

#15 - Judy Garland:  "Over The Rainbow" -  'Nuff said.

#14 - Bronski Beat:  "Smalltown Boy" -  Even though there's cute boys and the words are gay, this wouldn't have made it in my top 20 (or 50 for that matter).

#13 -  Diana Ross:  "I'm Coming Out" - The title alone would put it on the list.  How many gay boys sang this into their hairbrush?

#11 - Gloria Gaynor:  "I Am What I Am" -  One of my favorite songs of all time but the first time I heard it was in its original form as a Broadway ballad from the great musical, La Cage Aux Folles.

#10 - Alicia Bridges:  "I Love the Nightlife" -  Yes, I do.

#9 -  Madonna:  "Vogue" - And what gay boy didn't do her moves in the bathroom mirror?

#8 -  Olivia-Newton John:  "Xanadu" - Must be her Australian roots.

#2 - Village People:  "YMCA" - To me, nothing is funnier than being at a wedding reception or sporting event and they play this song and EVERYone gets up and starts waving their arms and rejoicing to the promiscuous ways of homosexual men.

Well, we haven't seen any songs from Bette Midler or Celine(!), only one from Barry Manilow, very few show tunes, only two from Madonna... who else is missing.... ABBA!!!
