Gotta love a Penal Play! (updated 3/26/08)

posted Wednesday, 26 March 2008

UPDATE:  Here's the review by Elisabeth Crean that appeared in the 3/26/08 edition of Seven Days.

On Saturday night (3/22/08) the guys - Bob, Mike and Johnnie - went to see the Champlain College Theater's production of "Our Country's Good."  It was presented at the Flynn Center in downtown Burlington.

There were a few reasons the guys decided to go... 1) there was nothing else to do; 2) they knew several of the actors... John Alexander, Walt Levering and Colin (Pookie) Cramer to name a few; and 3) there's a bar right in the theatre and you can drink during the show.

In a nutshell, the plot involves the establishment of Sydney, Australia as a penal (gotta love a penal play) colony (yeah, there's a colon joke, there, too) by the British in the 1700's.   To add some civilization to the newly created society, one of the officers decides to present a play using the convicts.  Hilariousness ensues!  Not quite, but it's an interesting piece that's very well performed.

Part history lesson, part commentary on societal/political evolution and part theatrical parody, it keeps you guessing, thinking and entertained.  Here's what Burlington Free Press writer Brent Hallenbeck had to say about it.
