Montpelier - Gayest State Capitol... per capita?

posted Wednesday, 23 January 2008

Was cruising around this wonderful world wide web the other day and landed on www.queerty.com .  I get a lot of ideas from there (some I outright steal!!) and share them with you here.  On Wednesday they were telling me that Washington state had just become the state with the largest gay caucus (Liza Little LOVES that word!) in their state legislature.  To prove it, they linked me up with www.seattlepi.com (the web page for the Seattle daily paper the Seattle Post-Intelligencer).

They reported that with the swearing in of Marko Liias, there were now six gay state representatives/senators gathering in Olympia to rule and govern all those Washingtonians. "That makes Washington the state with the largest Capitol gay caucus, according to the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, a Washington, D.C.-based political action committee."

Well, I went to www.victoryfund.org and according to my search, New Hampshire leads the way with 7, then Washington's 6 and then Vermont and California have five each!  Yeah!

The five out Vermonters who meet under the Golden Dome are Robert Dostis (Representative from Waterbury Center), Ed Flannigan (Senator from Chittenden County), Steve Howard (Representative from Rutland - although the website says he's from Virginia), Bill Lippert (Representative from Hinesburg) and Jason Lorber (Representative from Burlington).

So, considering there are less than 700,000 people in the whole state of Vermont, per capita, I'd say we'd be leading the way.  Hey, it's my blog, I can say what I want!!

BTW, if you're looking at the title and think that it should be capitAl instead of capitOl, I'm referring to the building, not the city.

AND, as I'm sure you've noticed, the representatives from Beaver Pond were NOT on the list... they may be "out there" but they ain't "out", I guess.

UPDATE: Just an hour or two after this was posted, Queerty changed their headline to: Washington tops California for (second) most gay politicians.  New Hampshire wins with seven.  Hmm...  are they looking at me?
